It’s an exciting time to be a filmmaker. Digital cinema cameras are getting cheaper, storage/media is more affordable, and today’s cinema cameras can be mounted with numerous new and vintage lenses with the use of a proper adapter. Older glass like the Russian LOMO square front anamorphic lenses are quite popular these days as the RED EPIC and Arri ALEXA 4:3 both allow for anamorphic shooting, “de-squeezing” the image in camera for proper monitoring and framing. The Blackmagic Cinema Camera, and it’s close to Super 16mm sized sensor, is helping to bring Super 16mm lenses out of the closest and onto the next generation of cinema cameras. Lens manufacturers such as Fujinon have listened to filmmakers, and are producing cinema lenses to cover larger 5K+ sensors. Their Cabrio 19-90mm zoom lens is quickly becoming a favorite among DP’s and features a T2.9 maximum aperture with 9 Iris Blades and an exclusive detachable servo unit.
Cinema lenses may very well hold their value better than any other piece of equipment in a filmmakers arsenal, and are considered a long term investment by most. If properly maintained, cinema lenses may have a useful life of 10-20 years.
